Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Code of Ethics. Overview An EMT must be willing to selflessly serve. They must abide by a code of ethics, as well as pledge an oath. In doing so, they are accepting the responsibility to serve the public, other healthcare providers, and their profession. The EMT code of ethics was written by Dr. Charles Gillespie and adopted by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) in 1978, and then revised in June of 2013 (NAEMT, 2013). Some of the major areas that the code of ethics covers are the conservation of life, compassion, trust, professionalism, clinical skills, standards, and teamwork. An EMT must be a professional. We are committed to preserving life, without causing further pain, and ensuring that we provide the highest standard of care across the board. Compassion must be shown in order to meet the needs of the patient. All patients must be respected regardless of race or socioeconomic status. We are charged with providing
