MGMT 1030 – Week 2 Movement - In the development of capitalism and of businesses, the ability to overcome distance is of critical importance. - The ability to move goods, people, and info. Into new markets allowed businesses, and cultures to develop in new ways The Cell Phone o Symbolizes many of the ways in which overcoming distance has changed society/business o The phone is an example of the transportation of goods/services over long distances; iPhone uses components across the world – assembled in China and distributed globally One Belt One Road - In 2013 Chinese leader Xi JinPing announced an ambitious plan to create a network of connections, both on land and at sea, to connect china, central Asia, Africa, and Europe - China will spend almost a trillion dollars on constructing infrastructure - The “belt” or land routes would follow the old silk road paths towards Europe and connect to Africa o The “Road” refers to sea routes that connect will Asian parts; Africa and through the Middle East to Europe o The Belt and Road would be controlled by China, but facilitate two-way trade Building Consensus - Xi has approached leaders of the countries the plan will connect in order to offer support and build agreement - Many have agreed, as the promise of infrastructure is very tempting - The various reports on this plan all reference the old Silk Road, the informal network of connections that linked China and Europe beginning in the BCE period and continuing until at least the 1400s The Silk Road - The name was coined long after the end of the routes existence by German geographer and traveler, Richthofen in the 1870s - It referenced the mot popular good that traveled west
