Human universals, generalities, and particulars All people have the same biological and psychological capabilities Everyone has the same cultural abilities o Where everyone can learn different cultures i.e. American and Canadian societies Humans share characteristics, both biological and cultural o Some are universal o Some are general o Some are particular Universals o Behaviours that all humans across the world share o Live in social groups, have families, share food, and have incest  taboos Generalities o Behaviours in different times and places in most cultures, but not in all  societies o Life-cycle events Birth, puberty, marriage, etc. o Concepts of family Particularities o Unusual and exotic beliefs specific to individual societies Culture change Diffusion o The spread of culture traits from one culture to another Acculturation
