Pearson 1 Koby Pearson Ms. Cannon English GATE 2/8/18 East of Eden Essay Some people are born with the belief that there is only one goal in life, which is to have power and pride. In John Steinbeck’s Christian driven novel, East of Eden, there is an array of people, with many life challenges and differences. Although, one in particular is a girl named Cathy Amesbury, who goes through her life acting as an aspect in Christian religion that contains sorcery and the ability to change the people around her. Ever since Cathy was a little girl, she was born with what Steinbeck writes as a, “mental or psychic monster”(71) who was able to use her beauty to change the souls of the people around her. At ten years old she began to learn that, “by the manipulation and use of this one part of people she could gain and keep power over nearly anyone” (74). This relates to a story in Early Genesis, which involved the devil manipulating Eve to take a bite of the forbidden fruit.
