Moody Farrag History 106 April 2, 2007 Ethnic and racial issues during WWII. Pop culture. LA, Latinos and young black. Series of Tensions as white servicemen get upset to people in LA. Example of clothing called the Zoot suit: big coat, baggy jeans, triangular form to it, loudly colored, flashy. Tension arises from white service men who could not work and kids are, Culminates in June, 1943. Sailors come and beat up kids with bats. Pissed of because kids are free and have money. Police there to arrest kids. “Zooters threaten police”. This is called Zoot Suit Riot . 1924 national origins act- stop Japanese immigration. Asian communities have traditional frame works. Group called Issei- the Japanese who live in America who were born in Japan. They came before 1924 and cannot become American citizens. Their children are the Nisei who are American citizens. Nisei form Japanese American citizen League. They try to provide a positive influence on American society by telling the society that they are good. Dec. 1941, wave of anti-Japanese and Asian across
