Set up a hot water bath using a 250 ml beaker and add approximately 200 mL of tap water. You can share water baths, 2 per bench is enough Please keep the LabQuest away from the hotplates!!!! 2. Add a thermometer from your drawer to the water bath. 3. Heat the water bath to 60-70 C on a hot plate. Adjust the setting to maintain this temperature. 4. Take the larger weigh boat from your kit to the balance. 5. Tare the balance with the weigh boat on the balance. 6. Weigh approximately 5 grams of lauric acid into the weigh boat. 7. Record this mass on your data sheet. 8. Transfer the lauric acid to the test tube. 9. Place the test tube with the lauric acid in the water bath. 10. Once the lauric acid begins to melt, insert the temperature probe to the test tube. Gently stir the acid with the thermometer using a slight up down motion until it is fully melted. Beware the test tube is fragile. 11. Make sure that the temperature is above 50 C before continuing to the next step 12. Remove the test tube from the water bath and record the temperature. This will be the temperature at time 0. 13. Record the temperature every 20 seconds for 10 minutes.
