Stephanie Verrell Verrell 1 English 4 A.P. Period 4 June 17, 2007 The Truth in Time Many literary works utilize the perception of time to enhance the novel in general. Alice Sebold is no exception to this case. In her novel, The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold utilizes the suspension and acceleration of time to portray contrasting ideas throughout the novel. Alice Sebold used the acceleration of time with the character of George Harvey and the suspension of time with the characters of Susie Salmon and, her father, Jack Salmon. On that fateful day in early December of 1973, Susie Salmon would define time for herself, her father, and her neighbor Mr. Harvey. As Susie walked home alone, she was brutally raped and murdered by her neighbor, Mr. Harvey. This unfortunate event led to the acceleration of time in the life of Mr. Harvey. After killing Susie, Mr. Harvey acted as though he had not done anything wrong. He immediately went into the future ignoring the fact that he had done something horrible. Even when others suspected
