Madison Juneau Mrs. Ney English III April 23, 2019 Gun Rights vs. Gun Control: What’s Needed More? Gun control and gun rights is a highly talked about topic in today’s society. Gun violence has increased more than ever in the past few years, starting to get worse in 2012 with the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. Since then, there have been over 200 school shootings and public gun violence occurrences. It states in the Second Amendment that every American citizen has the right to bear arms, also known as, you have the right to own a weapon and carry it in your possession. Guns are one way of showing a lot of violence, but they’re also very essential and very much needed when you’re in danger and need to protect yourself. Here’s a situation: a teacher was raped by a student during her first few weeks of teaching, a writer was stalked by a man who used to live in her neighborhood forcing her to move, and a female columnist was threatened by a mugger in Washington D.C. It’s so clear that we can’t live in a world without violence. It’s very unfortunate, but this is the cruel and hateful world we live in. But, there’s a solution; self-defense. Now self-defense isn’t always effective unfortunately in some cases, but in many cases it is. Ann Coulter, the columnist who was almost mugged claims that “Without guns, I’m what you would call prey (Cothran, Pg. 84).” She must’ve had to use a gun or weapon for self-defense. Guns are sometimes very necessary when it comes to protecting yourself. If she didn’t have that gun with her during that time, she most

likely would’ve gotten very hurt or injured, or even worse, she could’ve been killed. Here’s another example: A man named David French, his wife is a sexual abuse survivor and was almost choked to death by a college boyfriend.
