Seany Gershen Detective Fiction 9/20/19 The Big Sleep Raymond Chandler Ch 1: 11 am, mid-October, rainy day Narrator: detective, Doghouse Reilly- Phillip Marlowe Sternwood Place, narrator goes in depth describing the wealthy look of the home Girl walks in, they kind of begin to flirt- she fell into his arms Butler walks in and tells Marlowe the general is ready to see him now Ch 2: Butler takes Marlowe into a greenhouse for meeting with General General’s body kind of deteriorating, super old Revealed that Marlowe was fired from the DA’s office for insubordination General has two daughters (carmen & Vivian), very crazy: Vivian got married to a crazy Irishman, and it didn’t even last a month- he went away a month ago abruptly General reveals he’s being blackmailed for the second time Someone blackmailed him before ($5,000), paid the money to Joe Brody Marlowe begins examining the envelope, says to pay $1000 to Arthur Gwynn Geiger General says Vivian and Carmen don’t really hangout Marlowe says he would just pay, but general claims he has pride They agree Marlowe will work for him Ch 3: Marlowe begins talking to one of the sisters (she’s basically naked, flirting with him) She got mad because he called her out on her drinking/legs etc. Ch 4: A. G. Geiger’s store: antique store? Marlowe wants some specific antique book, he puts on a strangely polite persona Marlowe begins following a man that came into the store and bought something Marlowe made it known he was following the guy Ch 5: Marlowe is trying to get a woman to label A.G. Geiger to see what he looks like The book Marlowe was asking about in the store (to the dumb girl) was made up The actual smart woman reading the law book (in the other bookstore down the street) described what A.G. Geiger looked like Marlowe leaves to go back to A.G. Geiger’s store
Seany Gershen Detective Fiction 9/20/19 Ch 6: Marlowe parked out outside the store to see A.G. Geiger and what he looked like (Charlie Chan mustache) Marlowe begins following Geiger (hopefully home) Marlowe camped out outside Geiger’s house in his car (hidden) A few cars would stop and go into Geiger’s house, a woman included: turned out to be Carmen Sternwood As Marlowe was about to go into the house, he heard three shots in the house Marlowe snuck in through the window, and when he got inside, he saw two people, one dead & one alive Ch 7: Marlowe describes the Asian fusion looking home Carmen was sitting naked in the room, potentially drugged up Geiger was shot dead Marlowe tried to dress Carmen to be nice, she began mumbling random words Marlowe decides to look around the home for clues Ch 8: Marlowe takes carmen home to the Sternwood mansion He then goes back to Geiger’s home Geiger’s body was gone, and a new spread covered where his body was Marlowe found a random room very opposite from Geiger’s (more manly)
