DeGray 1Julianna DeGrayMs. Morrison Argumentative Essay11 February 2019Ethan FromeSympathy is a feeling of pity or sorrow for a person’s misfortunes. People show sympathy through messages and cards in events such as a passing of a loved one or some tragic event. Ethan Frome is a novella by Edith Wharton, where the main character Ethan Frome falls in love with Mattie Silver, his wife Zeena’s cousin. Ethan, even though he commits this sin, is still a sympathetic character. Ethan also works on a farm which also sparks the isolation he feels. The setting of the novella is during the winter in the town of Starkfield, Massachusetts. The winter is a symbol of the constricting effects a harsh winter climate can have on the human spirit.Ethan is the most sympathetic character in the novella due to him refusing to let Zeena kick Mattie out because she has nowhere to go, he is okay with Hale not giving him the money from the lumber early, and when he does not leave Zeena by herself on the farm.Ethan refuses to allow Zeena kick out Mattie because Mattie has nowhere to go. When Zeena returns form her trip from the town over, she tells Ethan that the doctor said she needed a hired girl and Zeena’s aunt had already found her one. Ethan, knowing how Mattie feels because he also has nowhere to go, tries to reason with Zeena. Ethan says with urgency, “‘You can’t put her out of the house like a thief--a poor girl without friends or money. She’s done her best for you and she’s got no place to go. You may forget she's your kin but everybody else’ll remember it. If you do a thing like that what do you supposed folks’ll say of you”(50). Ethan does not want Zeena to kick Mattie out because she literally has nothing besides Zeena and Ethan. Ethan tried
