Gabby Ela May 6 Mrs. Kester Feminism Feminism has been around for a very long time and it has evolved periodically. Feminism is often described as the belief that men and women should have equal rights. Feminism has taken place in four waves, the first wave was in the 19th and early 20th century, the second wave took place around the 1960’s and 1970’s then, the third wave took place in the 1990’s, finally the fourth wave took place around 2008 and has continued ever sense. In modern day feminism social media has reshaped feminism in a positive way. Social media gives women the confidence to tell their stories regarding domestic violence, sexual harassment, and even sexual violence. Social media gives women the confidence to speak out and to let them know that someone is willing to listen to their stories, or even pass them on to someone who is in a similar position to let them know that they can be helped. According to the text, “the social media phenomenon that shed light on sexism across industries, including the humanitarian aid sector, and gave women a platform to speak out about sexual abuse” (Powell).Social media has been a positive thing for women and girls because it has given them a way to speak out. Social media has also made feminism more notable and has drawn excessive attention to the movement. Violence against women is another reason for feminism because women never get the justice they deserve. There are many types of violence against women such as human trafficking, dating violence, and stalking. Many women are afraid to get out of a situation like that because
they are scared of the abuser and they are scared that the abuse will become worse if they try to escape. Many people try to make it seem as if the victim was in the wrong because they put themselves in the position of rape, or sexual harassment because they didn’t fight back or they were “asking for it”. According to the text, “Although it is no longer the case in Britain, a large percent of the world refuses to recognise rape within marriage as a criminal offense.” Out of
