Jackson ignored, didn’t want to deal with slaves, Tyler/Polk annexed finally in 1845. Texas became equal with strengthening slavery, thanks to Calhoun’s letter, Clay and Van Buren decided to reject on basis of not wanted war with Mexico (BIG fail for Van Buren, southern democrats super offended, stock in Polk). Was Polk’s campaign basis, along with 54-40. Sectionalism begins rupturing party system, manifest destiny/ greater expansion is supported by federal government, slavery cannot be kept from politics much longer. 16 54-40 or Fight Oregon was disputed territory between American and Britain, Britain owned it but Americans settled it. Became campaign slogan for Polk, meaning that his administration would be willing to fight for the extreme upper bound of the Oregon Territory at 54^40 (northern latitude), secured Willamette Valley and harbor of Puget Sound, northerners felt Ended up compromising with Britain at 49th parallel in 1846, est that the government was increasingly willing to fight for territory 14
