1-16-08 Norms: standards or rules about what is acceptable behavior -Norms takes place in every culture although may be different from culture to culture Ideal Culture: ideas about how people in particular situations ought to feel and behave. People’s subjective perception of what their culture is-or should be- like. Real Culture: what takes place in reality. *rasism is part of real culture but not ideal culture Universal- cultural practice that takes place in every culture through out the world. *funerals and marriages are universal; practiced in every culture although different in every culture. Culture is shared *Dominant Cultural Models – the group with the most decision making power and decide what the norms are *Subculture – such as the Amish *Norms Culture is learned not inherited *Socially transmitted *Not biologically inherited *Socialization aka Enculturation *we find out the norm by watching others reactions and responses to situations.
