phonological system: the grammer ( pattern) of
Sounds of that language
lexicon : a mental dictionary, the vocab. that
one has stored in the brain.
morphological rules. the rules used to construct
words from their component parts.
syntax: the set of rules a person uses
form units of language larger than words.
also refers to the study of those rules.
semantics the study of meaning.
There are several levels of grammar that
must be aquired. You must aquire
phonological system , and you
need to learn
the vocab (sign lexicon) and you
learn about morphological rules, syntax , and
semantics. All these factors make up language
and in order
learn and understand
language we have
to learn and understand
these factors listed above.
Compare the diff. between
linguistic competence and
linguistic competence: the (mostly) subconscious
knowledge of language that allows a speaker
to create a potentially infinite # of messages.
productivity: the ability to produce messages
that one has never produced before and to
understand messages you've never heard/seen before....
