2 SUMMARY OF ORIGINAL RESEARCH STUDIES SUMMARY The articles reviewed for this paper are intended to answer PICOT questions regarding the early identification and treatment of sepsis as it relates to the mortality rate amongst patients that either are suspected of or are currently septic. Two qualitative and two quantitative studies were reviewed to collect the information. The studies were original research that was conducted retrospectively in most cases. The quantitative studies focused on the care of a patient in the ED setting and asked the questions of how the early administration of antibiotics may affect the depth of care that a patient receives after presenting to the emergency department as well as the performance level of sepsis surveillance tools lowered mortality rate. The researchers utilized a retrospective analysis of EMR databases and randomized the study by selecting patients from a variety of hospitals.
