Cold War competition between the USA and USSR, 1945 to 1991 Arms race Both sides developed more conventional weapons than any other time in history. Both sides acted as though war would happen any minute and were prepared immediately for war. (planes, tanks, artillery, and nuclear weapons). Both sides developed competing military alliances : NATO and Warsaw Pact Both sides engaged in extensive spy networks and developed intelligence communities: The CIA and the KGB were created to spy on each other. U2 planes were created to spy on the Soviet Union. These are planes that can fly at about 7 miles up in the atmosphere and usually cannot be detected by radar. Long range and short range missiles were built. ICBM or Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles: These missiles could strike a target from thousands of miles away. Trident Submarines and Polaris Submarines can launch nuclear missile from almost anywhere in the world without their location ever being detected.
