1 COURSE SYLLABUS Healthy Lifestyles (HLTH 1030) Online Fall 2019 Weber State University Department of HPHP CLASS SCHEDULE Meeting Times: This class is conducted entirely online; no scheduled class time exists. Students may work according to their own schedules but they must complete required activities (e.g., assignments, discussion boards, and exams) by designated deadlines (see “Course Outline” for due dates). Due dates listed in the Course Outline are based on Mountain Standard Time . INSTRUCTOR Name: Chris Eisenbarth , PhD, MS, MCHES. Email: [email protected] (please allow a 48-hour turn-around time for email replies). Phone: 801-626-6316 (please allow a 48-hour turn-around time for phone messages). Office Location: Swenson 307H. Office Hours: Monday/Tuesday/Thursday, 12:30-2:10. Additional office consultations are available by appointment. Dr. Eisenbarth also will be available for student consultations at a distance using email, chat, computer conferencing, and other technologies. COURSE OVERVIEW Description: A systematic approach to promote health-enhancing behaviors related to the prevention of disease and achievement of optimal health. The course focuses on the total person with a consideration of the mental, emotional, intellectual, social, physical, and environmental dimensions that impact health. Direction: The basic aim of the HLTH 1030 course is to provide students with information and skills (a) to enhance their personal health, and (b) to explain connections between lifestyle and health outcomes from a social-science perspective (i.e., the relationship of individuals within their environments or larger society). This course satisfies a WSU General Education requirement in the Social Sciences, and is required for students seeking degrees in Health Promotion, Human Performance/Exercise Science, and Athletic Therapy/Training. 2 COURSE GOALS & GENERAL EDUCATION LEARNING OUTCOMES (GELO)* Big Question/Signature Assignment (Assessed through Assignments 1-5) : This course is part of the WSU General Education (GE) program. GE courses introduce students to academic disciplines through important “Big Questions” (BQ) and “Signature Assignments” (SA) that require students to integrate and apply course content to address a significant personal, social, or professional issue. HLTH 1030 is designed to tackle the BQ “How do I live a healthy life?” through a SA “Behavior - Change Project”.
