Kelly 1 Josh Kelly English 101 Mrs. Mulvaney 11 December 2006 Global Warming Global warming is an issue that has been around for many years and in more recent years has become a major pandemic. Everyday we are learning more and more about these catastrophic events which are taking place right before our eyes. If one acts now then the world might be able to be repaired. In 1880, a scientist first released a statement that said Global Warming was a man made problem. It said that burning fossil fuels would increase CO 2 in the air to enhance the greenhouse effect and thus cause global warming. Calculations by these scientists indicated that the global temperature should have risen more than 1 C by 1940, and it had not. A groundbreaking event for the issue of Global Warming happened in 1979. Mrs. Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of the UK, and she elevated that Global Warming was a major international policy issue. In reality, from the 1940`s the global climate was in fact cooling, and there was a major fear of a Global Cooling. This cooling effect took place until the early 1970`s when the fear now was on the rise of the earths temperature called Global Warming. (Courtney) The idea that man made pollution is responsible for global warming is actually not supported by historical fact. There is a period known as the Holocene Maximum it is the hottest period in human history. The interesting thing about this is that it occurred approximately 7500 to 4000 years before human's invented devices that cause pollution. (Hieb)

Kelly 2 When one looks into the past, they can see that there are a few instances when Global Warming actually saved us, from a mini ice age. The reason the earth goes into these drastic changes from Global Warming to Global Cooling is because the earth has cycles. The biggest factors that affect Global Warming are the cyclical variations in the sun's energy output, eccentricities in the Earth’s orbit, the influence of plate tectonics on the distribution of the continents and oceans, and last but not least, the most prevalent factor in Global Warming, The Green House Effect, which is caused by gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxides which then stay in the atmosphere
