The Anglo-Saxon culture passed down stories orally because there was no set form writing. These stories tell of warriors who show heroic traits valued by their culture. Beowulf is an epic poem that demonstrates Anglo-Saxon values. The hero in an epic poem shows the values of his life. There is a gruesome battle between good and evil. Epic poems have initially been memorized and told through many generations by oral tradition until they were written down. Beowulf is a representation of an epic poem because it is about strength, valor, and loyalty. In Beowulf , there is a terrible battle between good and evil being fought between the evil creature, Grendel and Beowulf, the hero. In Anglo-Saxon society, values are essential to everyday life.
