States #1 - Regions are “user defined” - We recognize them by states, how they become a state, the different state governments, etc, and some of the most influential people in these states - Most of the world is defined as a sovereign state, or have international treaties that define them (Antarctica) - The US is a new state but one of the oldest “sovereign states” - Most of Africa and even Russia is very new - Before sovereign states, people would have identified themselves as part of a ethnic group or culture - Not everything was tied to territory like it is today - In the US we call states “countries” - A state is a legally defined territory that is recognized by other states (193 right now) - Nation- a group of people who share a common culture (perhaps an infinite number) - Nation-states are a group of people who share a common culture and are within a state (all of europe, iran, china, japan, korea) - Not every state is a nation-state (US, India, Sudan) - There is now a South Sudan (as of July 9th, 2011) - The US is more tied together by ideas rather than a culture or religion - Many nations don’t have their own states (Basque or Curds(?) Abkhazia or Palestine or Kosovo - Sovereign states never willingly give up territory (dogshit island) - All you need to become a state is sovereignty - Sovereignty - the quality of having supreme authority over a state, nobody can supercede sovereignty outside of the country - To prove you have sovereignty, you have to do something extreme (like killing your own people and getting away from it) - Example: dropping a nuclear bomb on New Jersey, nobody could do anything because of reciprocity (kind of a respect thing) - For most of history, monarchs ruled (people bestowed with power) (excalibur, divine right of kings, mandate of heaven) - Sovereignty moved from ruling over people(french king ruling franks to ruling france) to ruling over a territory - Shift from individuals with sovereignty to the people (democracy) with sovereignty - The only true way to prove sovereignty was to defend yourselves (historically, not so
