Chapter 1 What is biology? Huge field of science, massive discipline Embryology (cell) Biological fields Also called disciplines liL Ornithology- study of birds Mammalogy - study of mammals Ichthyology- study of fish Entomology- study of insects Botany - study of plants Taxonomy - naming and classifying living things Herpetology - study of reptiles and amphibians Ecology- study of ecosystem Histology- study of tissues Genetics- study of inheritance Mycology- fungi Paleontology- fossils Anatomy- biological form or shape Physiology- study of functions in the body Virology- study of viruses Microbiology- study of everything thats microscopic Agriculture- study of mass production of organisms for human consumption Zythology- scientific study of beer fermentation (beer production) Biology the study of life Characteristics of life Evolutionary adaptation - every living thing should be able to adapt to their surroundings to live there Order- living organisms aren’t randomly assembled but organized (every human has the same cardiac structure) Regulation- control body and maintain homeostasis (Start sweating to maintain body temp) Energy processing- metabolism, convert energy from one thing to another. Growth and development- all living things grow and have an increase in complexity Reproduction- having babies Response to environment- responding to a stimulus (venus flytrap eating insect)
Levels of life “Nature has no obligation to be simple” Biologist divide world into different levels Biosphere- biggest level of life (planet) where all living things exist Ecosystem - ex. desert doesn't have to be hot or sandy largest desert is the antarctic. Large area of habitat and we investigate how living and nonliving factors interact. Communities- how the living relationships interact Populations- how the individual organisms interact together ( in our classroom we have a population but if a dog comes in its a community) Organisms- Individual organism Organs and organ system Tissues- cells- organelles- atoms Diversity of living organisms You can name the new species you find Grouping species: the basic idea “How you organize your house” Put kitchen stuff in the kitchen ( group) We group organisms together based on the similarities they share Evolution, the overarching theme of biology Modern evolution theory is the most important thing in bio, makes everything simple. Based on relationships (family) Charles darwin “Descent with modification” We came from the same ancestors but we changed over time Scientific method used for everything Discovery science is very important Does Not include experiments Collect data to better understand the world Can’t always collect quantitative data collection Jane goodall wrote book with chimp behavior and social structure (qualitative data)
