Stat 100 3 reasons to study statistics: 1. informed consumer 2. informed citizen 3. future career Chapter 1 – Benefits and Risks of Using Statistics Statistics is: -Numbers measured for some purpose (memorization) (Simple Definition) -Collection of procedures and principles for gaining and analyzing information in order to help people make decisions when faced with uncertainty (complex definition) Key Definitions: 1. Uncertainty - implies that natural variation exists in data 2. Unit - a single individual or object to be measured 3. Population - is the entire collection of units about which we would like to have information 4. Sample - collection of units actually measured from which we obtain information 5. Statistics - the art and science of using sample data to make generalizations about population in the presence of uncertainty 3 Things needed to conduct a proper study: 1. get a representative sample (accurate representation of the population) 2. get a large enough sample 3. in comparative studies
