Commercial Revolution - By 1750, ideal Christian no longer selfless saint but enterprising businessman - Overseas trade led changed patterns of economic growth and society - Process began that would give Europe supremacy by 1900 - Standard of living still low, disease and famine - “New Rich” emerged European Expansion - Forces Behind Expansion: o Population growth of 1450 to 1650 o Merchants and shippers, international trade o Increase in wealth of prosperous Europeans o Centralizing monarchial state o Religion (Crusades) o Technology - Gunpowder, sailing ship crucial in transit and conquest - Portuguese o Long Atlantic coastline, sunny climate o Less influence of feudal nobility (typically anti-trade) o By last ¼ of 15 th Century, had strong trade in W. Africa and Atlantic island colonies o Began trading w/ Africans gold/slaves o Broke commercial monopoly on Eastern goods by sailing to Orient (Vasco de Gama after Bartholomeu Dias found Cape of Good Hope) o Genoese and Italian (Venetian) investment - Spanish o Christopher Columbus won support of Queen Isabella to said west o Stories of large quantities of gold and silver to the west struck interest o
