Syllabus for English II Gifted and Pre-AP2019-2020Mrs. Lindsay BurkeRoom: 1-168Phone: (407) 320-9568Email:[email protected]Course PhilosophyThis course teaches writing through the fundamentals of rhetorical theory.We will examine the way language influences how wethink, act, and perceive the world as well as what values it reveals about a given society or culture.Throughout our course of study,we will analyze how diction, syntax, figurative language, and mechanics shape a writer’s style.My goal as your teacher is to help youdevelop as readers, writers, andlearners. This course will also prepare you for AP Language and Composition as well as furtherdevelop your reading and writing skills for college courses.As we delve into a new year of literary inquiry, I hope to impart on you anew found passion for literature and writing.Primary TextbooksSpringBoard English Language Arts: Grade 10(replacement cost $17.85)Elements of Literature: Fourth Course*Notice– As per School Board Policy, each student shall be responsible for returning all items issued to him/her in good condition for use during theterm. The student and his or her parents are required to pay the purchase price for any lost or unusable textbooks.Payments shall be required onor before 10 days from the deadline for returning all issued textbooks. Students should carefully check book for any previous damage. Damagedtextbooks must be returned to the Media Center the same day they are assigned, or the student will be held accountable.List of Required SuppliesStudent Planner of your choice (or notes section of your phone)1 package of 5 three-ring notebook dividers3 ring binder divided into the following sections (Writing, Short Works, Lit Study, Grammar, and Resources)Notebook paper (divided among each section of your binder)#2 pencils with good erasers (Ticonderoga are the best)Black, blue, and red ink pensPack of4colored highlightersYou musthave the following available for your use out of school:Access to Microsoft Word and a reliable printer with plenty of printer paper and black inkAccess to the internet, Skyward, and eCampusGrading CalculationsEach assignment should demonstrate your grasp of the concepts and content discussed.Please keep up with your grades onSkyward as your grade should never be a surprise!Semester grades are determined by averaging the two nine-week/quarterlynumerical grades.Each quarter will count toward 50% of the student’s final semester grade.Grades will be determined on the
