Michael Glamore October 19 th , 2005 Homework Assignment # 4 1) A) The two sources for magnetic behavior are the spin of the electron around its own axis and the spin of the electron around the nucleus. Because this is a moving charge it can be considered a small current loop, generating a very small electric field. B ) Because of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, an electron must always be moving, if an electron (charge) is moving, a current and magnetic loop will be created. Because it always has to be moving, it will always have a current and net magnetic flow. C) In a diamagnetic material the atoms have no net magnetic moment when there is no applied field. Atoms do not have to have net magnetic moment as the various ‘up’ or ‘down’ phases of spin and magnetism can cancel each other out. Canceling in electrons pairing up will no have all magnetic purpose. 2) At the curie temperature for a given ferromagnetic material, increased thermal motion (an increase in temperature) will randomize the directions of any moments that may be
