Imagine if there was a way to raise awareness for animals, find them new homes and create an interactive environment for hours of playful attention. Fortunately there is, with animal cafes blooming throughout countries and flourishing with each cafe. An animal cafe is defined in Japan as a place where pet owners and their animals can interact. Many animal cafes provide their visitors with animals that the cafe itself owns, with the option of adopting an animal. They pose as an opportunity for non pet owners to engage with animals on their free time without the responsibility of caring for an animal daily. While animal cafes seem to be the perfect solution to raising animal awareness, are these animals given the proper care they need to be exposed to animal lovers across the globe? Are the animals placed in these cafes receiving the adequate care and attention they need without exploitation? Overall, how ethical are these franchises? This question is significant to the morality of these franchises and how they treat the animals in their possession. Animal cafes originated about 12 years ago in Taiwan and have exploded around the globe ever since. Although these organizations are created in attempts of drawing attention to animals in need in hopes of finding them a home and raising awareness for rescued animals, some of these franchises are being convicted of animal abuse and neglect. Whether these cases are due to poor holding conditions or lack of appropriate space for these animals, concerns are raised for these animals as they could very well be placed in the palms of irresponsible animal cafe owners. The alarming factor of this issue is that the spread of animal cafes continue to bloom. Today Japan is known for having the largest amount of animal cafes in the world with more than 150 cafes extended within the country. The global importance of this question is that if animal cafes are unethical organizations that abuse, neglect and exploit animals, the growing

widespread of these cafes should be prevented. In this essay, three perspectives will be presented. Perspective one and three will focus on the belief that animal cafes are unethical franchises that exploit, neglect and even abuse animals. On the other hand, perspective two views animal cafes as the perfect solution to raising animal awareness, rehabilitating rescued animals and finding the animals in their care loving homes. To begin with, it can be argued that animal cafes are unethical forms of recognition for rescued animals because these franchises may only lead to further abuse, neglect and even exploitation. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to hear of animal abuse cases taken place in these cafes and or animal cafes being shut down for unethical findings. Take into account the numerous reports exposing several animal cafes for immoral acts upon the animals in their care.
