1. A) One type of chemical impurity is Iron Oxide (FeO 2 ). This will cause absorption of energy that needs to be reflected in total internal reflection. It does this by causing the band gap to become more a spectrum, therein allowing electron excitement to higher energy levels by the light that needs to be transferred. Therefore, an impurity atom that would change the band gap would be hazardous to the transmission. Magnets will not be able to remove this because of the strong crystal lattice structure. Alternatively, distillation is able to separate silicon from impurities. Physically, bubbles in the glass and surface have to be eliminated to ensure that no light will be scattered that would change the angle of total internal reflection and cause light and energy to escape. One advantage of fiber optics is that the fibers can transmit light of many different energies. Are there any limitations on possible energies for transmission?
