The Great Gatsby Chapter Notes Characters Other 1 Narrator moves East. He lives in a small cottage. He is the neighbor of Mr. Gatsby. They live on the water. He goes over to his cousin’s house for dinner. He meets Jordan Baker. They have dinner. Nick, narrator, finds out that his cousin’s husband is cheating on her with a woman in New York. Nick leaves and goes home. He sees Mr. Gatsby for the first time in his backyard looking at the stars. Thinks that Mr. G is shivering/ shaking. Nick - narrator Gatsby - Nick’s neighbor with mansion Daisy - Nick’s cousin, very lovable, flower Tom - Daisy’s husband, ex-football player, strong man Jordan Baker - friend of Daisy 2 Valley of ashes. The eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic. They look from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles. Nick is introduced to Tom’s mistress. Nick meets George B. Wilson, Myrtle Wilson’s husband. Tom, Myrtle, and Nick go to New York and they drink into the night. Nick meets Catherine. Catherine says that Myrtle and Tom hate their partners. Lucille and Chester are also at this little party. Tom and Myrtle get in a fight about Daisy and Tom breaks Myrtle’s nose. Nick walks out and Chester invites him to lunch one day. George B Wilson - car repair man, Myrtle’s husband Myrtle Wilson - Tom’s mistress (pg 25) Catherine - Myrtle’s sister Lucille and Chester McKee - neighbors of Myrtle’s place in New York 3 Nick gets invited to one of Gatsby’s parties. He goes and finds Jordan and hangs out with her. He continues to look for Gatsby during the party. Nick and Jordan go into the house and find a man Owl eyed man - drunk guy at Gatsby’s party who crashes his car Gatsby - reassuring smile, understanding, elegant roughneck,

in the library drunk. The “owl-eyed” man is very astonished that all the books are real. Nick and Jordan are sitting at a table talking to a middle aged man who turns out to be Gatsby. Gatsby invites Nick to go hydroplaning with him. Gatsby pulls Jordan aside to talk to her. Nick claims that Jordan is dishonest. She apparently lied about her first golf tournament. Nick says that he is one of the few honest people he knows. ~30 (pg 48) 4 Gatsby takes Nick to lunch. Gatsby tells Nick that he was the son of wealthy people and that he went to Oxford. Nick believes that Gatsby is lying, that he didn’t go to Oxford. Gatsby then says he traveled a lot after and then be went to war and became the first lieutenant. Gatsby shows Nick an award he got from the war and a pic of him at Oxford. A policeman pulls Gatsby over but lets him go once he realizes who he is. Gatsby introduces Nick to Mr. Wolfsheim. Gatsby says that Mr. Wolfsheim is a gambler. He apparently fixed the World Series in 1919. Nick sees Tom and introduces Tom and Gatsby. Gatsby tells Nick to talk to Jordan. Jordan says that Gatsby want to reunite with his one true love, Daisy.
