Astronomy 10 Spaceflight II 9/25/06 Soviets used the RD107 rocket, and it is possibly the most reliable rocket. o They are very cheap and highly functional The first satellite was Sputnik and it was launched by the soviets o Shocked the Americans o Very political move and made the Americans very uncomfortable If you can put a satellite in orbit, you can launch an H-bomb anywhere o Showed the Americans that they were behind o Americans launched a massive program in defense against the USSR Grazing Incidence: o X-rays and Gamma Rays won’t go though normal mirrors, so they curve the mirror so that they can gather them. o Only for high protons o Very expensive Probes are the satellites that don’t orbit Earth, but go other places (such as other planets) Uri Gagarin: o First cosmonaut to go into space (first human in space) o Went up in 1961 o Went into space for the USSR USSR built space stations while the Americans were working on colonizing the moon o Could attach two cruse ships to the space stations
