Volcanoes and Ice 10/11/06 Cinder cone o Happens when water is mixed with lava o Lava becomes frothy and it sprays out and falls as frothy cinder Gezer o Happens when water hit hot rock and creates an explosion of steam Mount Olympus o Largest volcano known o On mars o Taller and thicker then any other volcano known Have pieces of basalt from Mars via meteorites o All roughly the same age (1.8 billion years old) o Generally one third the age of other meteorites Io o Most volcanic place in the solar system o Has half a dozen volcanoes spouting off at the same time o Most volcanically active object known o No impact craters on Io Only surface known without craters Resurfaces itself every 100 years because of all the active volcanoes o There are lava lakes o Working fluid on Io is not rock Sulfur makes the volcanoes move Surface is made of different types of sulfur Venus o Has active volcanoes Moon o Tiny bit of volcanism on the Moon
