Astronomy 10 Extraterrestrial Life 10/18/06 Magnetic Fields: o Nobody really understands them o Mercury has a magnetic field, but it is very weak o Solar wind hits that ionizes the atoms and creates an ionosphere o Ionosphere happens any tie a solar wind hits an atmosphere o Earth’s magnetic field act kind of like a bar magnet Particles that get trapped must be ionized Particles hit the Earth’s Field around the poles, but not exactly around the poles Magnetic field is not completely centered Lots of charged different particles in the field Discovered by an American Called the Van Allen belts that are immediately charged particles; there is an inner and an outer belt Ultraviolet light excited the atmosphere and you can see that there is a lot of air father then we think there is because the atmosphere doesn’t actually end Northern Lights (Aurora): Six basic shapes of the aurora o Waves o Morpheus curtain o Rays o Pulsating o Green tint- Because of Oxygen
