Astronomy 10 The Sun 10/23/06 Sun contains about 99% of the mass of the solar system Life on Earth is completely dependent on the Sun Not very different from the gas giants in chemistry o Has the same chemical components of the Gas Giants but just more the them Full Disk of the Sun o See sun spots (nobody really knows what they are) Spots usually have a dark inner core and a much less darker inner fringe that is usually streaky One hundred to two hundred sun spots are visible at a time as a maximum Long span where there were hardly any sun spots (from 1650 to 1700) Sun spots are mostly north or south of the equator (Butterfly diagram) Almost never by the equator As old sun spots disappear, new spots begin to appear o There are periods were there are no sun spots Every time a sun spot cycle changes the polarity changes (each cycles polarity is the opposite of the last cycle) The sun spot is cooler (why they are darker) Magnetic fields lines are concentrated and vertical to the surface
