Astronomy 10 The Big Bang 12/1/06 Radar is the most accurate for gauging distance All stars are farther then 3 and a quarter light years Quarter of the stars that we thought were 25 light years are farther Best way to estimate the distance of a star is to get its spectra If you can fit a star right on the main sequence, then usually you can be right about its luminosity and can predict its distance pretty accurately Cepheid Variables are the best bet o Are 15 percent closer then we thought o North Star is the only Cepheid that has stopped pulsing Measurements are tentative and flimsy Can measure Cepheids for sure around 70 million light years away All type one super novae are the same brightness o They are not all identical- minority opinion right now o Conclusion that they are all the same is a very flimsy argument Hubble’s Law o Very flimsy o Nobody claims that it can be used accurately Know for a fact that the farther away something is the more its spectra is shifted towards
