Question #1: What is the purpose of this lawsuit – as in what is Dred Scott suing for? For the freedom of him, his wife and their two daughters. Question #2: The document is attempting to “determine who were citizens of the several States when the Constitution was adopted.” What do they come up with? Slaves and their descendants were not “part of the people, nor intended to be included” so therefore they were not considered citizens. Question #3: The document is attempting uses several colonial laws to support its position. Identify and explain one of these laws. One law talked about was a law from Maryland that basically stated that if any black married a white women or white man married a black women then that black would become a slave for life except for kids born from white women; they would only become servants for 7 years.
