TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS Abstract Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), which is characterized by a combination of insulin resistant cells and the dysfunction of insulin-producing beta cells, is a common chronic disease that affects millions of people all over the world. Without a more effective treatment and solution, the rates of type 2 diabetes will continue to dramatically increase in all populations. Stem cell therapy is a possible solution that holds promising results in not only effectively treating diabetes, but also potentially reversing the disease. There are case studies on using mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) to treat patients with type 2 diabetes and the results revealed that MSC transplantation have positive and safe therapeutic effects and can decrease blood glucose levels in the patients. In the past 35 years, the rates of type 2 diabetes significantly increased in China and has become a public health issue. The increased rates of diabetes in China are due to the economy’s rapid development and urbanization that led to unhealthy lifestyle choices, which contribute to the risk factors of type 2 diabetes. Although stem cell therapy is often debated on due to its ethical issues and is deemed morally controversial, it is considered the best solution to resolving China’s high rates of diabetes because China’s government highly supports the idea and greatly funds the research program. With China’s support and funding, stem cell therapy can be an effective solution for type 2 diabetes. Keywords : Type 2 diabetes mellitus, China, Stem cell therapy, Mesenchymal stem cells 2

TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that affects how the body processes glucose (blood sugar). It is a common disease that affects millions of people all around the world and is consistently increasing due to high risk factors such as obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. In the past 35 years in China, there has been a significant increase in the rates of type 2 diabetes and more people are constantly being diagnosed. Type 2 diabetes is a serious and long-term disorder that may be treated and potentially reversed with better solutions such as stem cell therapy. This research paper will examine the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus, reasons for China’s increasing rates of diabetes, and stem cell therapy as a solution to the disease. Scientific Perspective Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a common chronic disease that affects millions of people of all populations of both developed and developing countries (Wu, Ding, Tanaka & Zhang, 2014). People with type 2 diabetes constantly have high glucose levels in the blood, also known as hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia can lead to a variety of symptoms such as blurred vision, fatigue and headaches, which is why patients with type 2 diabetes must monitor their blood sugar levels several times a day (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2018). The excess amount of glucose in the blood is

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
