PROFESSIONALISM AND CIVILITY 2 Introduction Professionalism is about demeanor, transparency, and reliability. As a student or an employee, it is important to exude a positive demeanor while being transparent and reliable in order to showcase professionalism in and outside the classroom or at the workplace. Professionals are mindful and hold themselves accountable for their thoughts, words, and actions, even when they have made a mistake. Additionally, professionalism refers to how individuals view their occupations in respect to their mindset. However, in the generic sense, workplace professionalism means working hard and generally being a good colleague at work. This aspect requires a high standard and belief towards the tasks, for an individual to structure and conduct them properly (Dinger et al., 2015). In this context, professionalism is associated with traits such as integrity, transparency, self-relation, competency, and accountability. In the workplace, it involves acting and speaking appropriately. Being transparent helps one to show empathy and compassion. Being transparent gives you the opportunity to share with others. This also allows you to be more aware of the people around you, and makes it easier for you to learn and grow as an individual. Transparency helps us to build relationships. Further, it provides diverse ways and means of organizing work, workers, and the different work relations. The concept of professional standards has many
