Chapter Three 1. Why is it ironic that Paul and his comrades refer to themselves as “stone-age veterans” when they compare themselves to the new recruits? Because they’re not that much older/experienced than the new recruits, they’ve just been desensitized to war. 2. Describe Katczinsky. What is his special talent? Katczinsky, or Kat, is like the father figure of the group, and Paul especially trusts him so much. His special talent is scavenging. 3. What is Kat’s philosophy of war? What is Kropp’s philosophy of war? What is the author’s intention in expounding these? ??? 4. Who is coming to the front? Why do these men strongly anticipate his arrival? ??? Chapter Four 1. Why are Paul and his comrades sent to the front? To put down barbed wire. 2. How do the men change as they approach the front? Why is this change necessary? ??? 3. What happens to the horses which are used in battle? They are brutally killed, they scream out in distress as they trip over their own intestines and slowly die. 4. How do Paul and his comrades manage to save themselves from the shelling? From the gas attacks? Hiding behind the coffins, Kat alerts them that there’s gas so they have time to put on their gas masks. 5. According to Remarque (the author), how does a soldier feel about the earth? The earth protects the soldiers at first (trenches) but later consumes them and literally sucks them in, as shown in some of the battle scenes Chapter Five 1. Why can’t the men get rid of their lice? Because there are just too many of them given the unsanitary conditions. 2. Why has Himmelstoss been sent to the front? Because he was too hard on the recruits (Tjaden especially) 3. How do the men treat Himmelstoss? They disrespect him and pull pranks on him. Tjaden starts having an insult war with him, and ends it by mooning him. 4. Why isn’t Tjaden fully prosecuted for his behavior? Because Himmelstoss hurt him in the past, so the behavior was almost Himmelstoss reaping what he sowed. 5. What dreams do the various members of the group have about going home? ???

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
