A Trip to Coontown (1898) by Bob Cole (composer) and Billy Johnson (lyricist). Played to both Blacks and Whites. Still had racial stereotypes but challenged some racist American elements The Origin of the Cakewalk (1898) by Will Marion Cook (composer) and Paul Laurence Dunbar (librettist). Although only a one-act creation, it became the first Balck musical on Broadway. Bert Williams and George Walker’s in Dahomey (1902), the first full length all Black Musical on Broadway, successfully synthesized all of the current strains of American musical theatre: minstrelsy, vaudeville, comic opera, and musical comedy. It ran for 4 years and the toured including to England where they performed it for King Edward VII. In 1902, they created “In Dahomey,” the first full length Black musical.
