EDUCATION AND MATH GEYER 2 Education and Math Math to most people is just a bunch of numbers, letters, and formulas that they believe they will never use - it is because of this mindset that people do not view it as important within education, but they couldn’t be more wrong. In ancient Greek math literally translates to “learning” and in ancient Hebrew it’s root is “thinking”. Even in its name, it is synonymous with learning and education. Why is math in education important? It seems like such a frivolous question, but it is a question constantly asked by students across all grades and schools. Without math, there would be no technology, no economy, no sciences -life as we know it would not exist without math. Not only is math critical to the population for us as individuals and our own personal brain power. A person doesn’t need to do math because they are smart; a person needs to do math because it makes them smarter, and not just in math but in all subjects. A lot of math deals with finding the patterns and seeing the connections between different things; essentially the basis for problem-solving skills. These skills are applicable in all subjects and aspects of life. It is because of this math has always been and continues to be at the forefront of education. HISTORY IN MATHEMATICS AND EDUCATION In the beginning, American education primarily only taught to elite society and only focused on religion, language, and grammar. Math wasn’t taught as it was seen as an academic subject. In fact, the first math professor at Harvard wasn’t 1726, ninety years after it’s founding.
