Transformations In general, what is a transformation? Change. Transformations of functions deal with the way that functions (more specifically, the graphs of functions) can be changed. Why Do We Care? Knowing how a function is being transformed can help us graph is more quickly. Identifying Transformations You will be given a function, called the parent function , and then you will be given a second function which will be written in terms of the parent function. Compare the two functions to see what transformation took place to get from the parent function to the second function. Subscribe to view the full document.

Identifying Transformations – Examples Given y = f(x), identify the following transformations: 1) g(x) = f(x) + 3 2) g(x) = f(x - 2) 3) g(x) = f(x) – 5 4) g(x) = f(x + 1) 5) g(x) = 2f(x) 6) g(x) = f(2x) Identifying Transformations – Examples 7) g(x) = -f(x) 8) g(x) = f(-x) 9) g(x) = f(x – 1) + 6 10)g(x) = 3f(x + 4) 11)g(x) = f(½x) – 8 12)g(x) = ⅓f(x – 4) + 9 Subscribe to view the full document.

Identifying Transformations – Examples 13)g(x) = f(5x + 2) - 8 14)g(x) = -f(x + 3) - 4 15)g(x) = 2f(-x) + 7 16)g(x) = -3f(2x + 4) + 6 17)g(x) = 6f(-2x) – 1 18)g(x) = -¼f(-3x – 9) + 5 Lecture #4 (con’t) Section 1.7 – Combinations of Functions; Composite Functions Subscribe to view the full document. • Spring '16

What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
