Visualizing molecular chirality in the organic chemistry laboratory using cholesteric liquid crystals By Michael Zatoulovski Date of Experiment 10/22/18 Jiye Son MQ9B 9-12:50 Abstract: The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize an imine. From the unknown substance given to us, the imine would either have an R or S chirality. To find the chirality we had to use 3D glasses and observe the color the substance gave off when sheared between two glass slides. In addition, we had to see if the color is seen using the right or left eye. After we determined the chirality of our unknown substance we had to find a group that had the opposite chirality and mix both substances and shear it on a glass slide. In our experiment, we had an R chiral substance. Observations: 1) When shearing the substance between two slides we observed a red color when looking with the right eye open, but nothing with the left eye. This is significant because it shows that we had a substance with R chirality.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
