ROMEO AND JULIET ACT V, SCENES 1-3 STUDY GUIDE 9TH HON COMP & LIT Summary: Balthasar, Romeo’s servant, tells him of Juliet’s death. Romeo buys poison from a druggist and heads for Juliet’s place of burial. Scene 1 1. In Line 25 what is Romeo’s attitude toward the stars? (Remember the term “star-crossed lovers” in Act 1 Prologue?) He is angry saying he “defies” the stars because the stars “drew” them together and now Juliet is dead breaking them apart. 2. In Lines 73 and 74, Romeo says the druggist can break the law in order to survive. Do you agree? Yes, he is poor, he can barely afford to pay for food and to live. If he doesn’t break the law he will die, if he does he will have more money to survive and if he gets caught he will die as he would have anyways if he didn’t help Romeo and get the money. 3. In Line 85, why do you think Romeo uses the word cordial? He wants to have warmth and friendliness instead of poison but to get that he needs to die so he can be with Juliet again.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
