Progressivism: Teddy Roosevelt After the assassination of W. McKinley, Vice president Teddy Roosevelt took over He ushered in the Progressive era in 1901 and it lasted until 1917 (WWI) Social Gospel had greatly influenced the Progressive movement which was led by mostly white middle class Americans, however women, African Americans, and labor unions were having their voices being heard like never before. Muckraker: a term made by Teddy Roosevelt to put down writers and journalists who wanted social reform that he felt took it too far. Ida Tarbell 1904 the history of the Standard Oil Company Jacob Riis photographer “How the Other Half Lives” exposed the horrible living conditions in NYC’s tennant apartments. McClure’s Magazine encouraged writers to dig up stories and exposed corruption. Lincoln Steffens wrote for McClure’s magazine “The Shame of Our CIties” exposing the corruption with politics and big business.
