1. What drives me to start research on violence aesthetics is the tale of Heike. When I read about all the burning of temples, suicide of women and scarifies for honor, I was immobilized by shock. I noticed other Japanese classic literature, such as Kamo no Chomei’s Hojiki, also holds insights into life and death, and redemption through killing. Those violent scenes are bloody brutal for sure, but they are full of glory spirit and poetic beauty. So I decided to study on the violence narrative and poetic criticism through close analysis on tale of Heike’s violent stories. 2. As an irrational, anti-human and sociopath behavior, violence has long been described and criticized in variety of literatures. However, as an aesthetic characteristic, violence narration transfers its indifference and cruelness to create a sense of poetic, tragedy and glory. There are many examples of pursuing essence and beauty of violence in traditional Japanese literatures, especially in medieval military chronicles. My paper will analyze the inevitability and value of violence through human nature, political, society, and history elements. 3. My research was focused on three major questions: first, the reason why massive amount of description of violence exist in Japanese Medieval Literature works? How is the beauty of violence represented in tale of Heike? And the third question is what’s the impact of violence aesthetic in pursuing of poetic affection? 4. First work I studied on is, of course, the tale of Heike, the origin of the samurai mythos and the starting point for the historical narrative of Japan as a military nation.
