1. The beliefs of Neo-Confucianism are very heavily related to the beliefs of Daoism. Neo- Confucians believe mainly in the views of Mencius, but they also take some beliefs or views from traditional or classic Confucianism taught by Confucius. The material reality in Neo-Confucianism is taiji. Everyone’s goal in life is to become a sage, or someone who has overcome that material world and their own desires. This would put them in union with taiji. Mencius relied mainly on ancient government techniques to formulate his belief system and the religion of Neo-Confucianism. Confucianism was invented by Confucius who was born in 551 BCE. Confucius started the religion of Confucianism in a time of war for the Chinese as an affirmation of peace in troubling times for the Chinese. After Confucius died, Confucianism spread all throughout China and surrounding countries and territories such as India and Korea. Over time, Confucianism faded away from society due to the rise of Buddhism. However, nearly 1,000 years later, the teachings of Confucius were revived in the form of Neo-Confucianism which held within it Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. In the thirteenth century, the Mongols invaded China and took it over, Neo-Confucianism, however, survived and the government the Mongols established was framed around Neo-Confucianism.
