UCSD Lactation Educator Program Study Review Worksheet Student: Imuriel Stephen _________________ Study 1 2 3 4 A. Study Title: Human Breast Milk Promotes the Immunomodulatory Function of Probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 in the Neonatal Rat Intestine B. Source: C. Authors: Department of Pediatrics, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston McGovern Medical School, Houston, Texas 77030, United States; Department of Molecular Sciences, Uppsala BioCenter, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden. D. Date: June 26, 2019 E. Three main points of the study : 1.) Studies have tested the hypothesis regarding breast milk and its immune contributions to infant intestine. One of the many benefits that breast milk provides is the “growth-promoting and immune- active components” that transform into a natural probiotic much needed for better intestinal health for infants. 2.) The formal term for the immune-building probiotic is Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938, or “LR”. Scientists tested their theory by studying the growth level rate of eight separated groups of newborn rats from their first day of life to their third. 3.) In conclusion, studies prove that human breast milk has the highest capability of promoting better intestinal health, and can also reduce inflammatory effects which can be caused by babies who are exclusively (or predominantly) formula-fed. F. Do you agree or disagree with authors view and/or outcomes? Why or why not? This article definitely adds more to the already-known fact that breastfeeding does provide healthier and immune-boosting benefits to infants in comparison to infants who are either mostly or fully formula fed instead. G. Who within your professional work arena are you going to recommend this study to and why ? I would recommend this article to nurses who specialize in promoting breastfeeding exclusively to mothers. Also beneficial for those who are involved in prenatal or WIC support programs to help educate crowds of all ages. H. Other comments : Information driven from the research study methodically proves the natural and medicinal benefits that human breast milk can provide vs. formula supplementation.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
