Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind 1. Background a. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was written and drawn, and animated by Hayao Miyazaki. It was originally a manga serialized on Tokuma Shoten’s monthly magazine, Animage, in Japan from 1982 to 1994, for whole 12 years. Miyazaki says he was inspired by Homer’s The Odyssey for his development of the character, Nausicaa. In Greek mythology, Nausicaa is the princess of Phaeacia and helps heal Odysseus after his shipwreck. She is a fearless character who helps him heal both physically and emotionally. Miyazaki used these character traits for his portrayal of Nausicaa. b. It was made into a 2-hour film in 1984 by the same publisher, Tokuma Shoten, and later on was published in English by Viz Media here in the States. This anime film was often recognized as the first Studio Ghibli film, but it’s actually not. This film was made before Studio Ghibli was ever created. It was the big success of Nausicaa in Japan that lead to the creation of Ghibli two years after it hit the screen. But it seems to have housed itself nicely under the Ghibli name, so I’m cool with it. Part of the reason we are talking about this film today is, as a matter of fact, I’m quite the Miyazaki fan girl, and Nausicaa is definitely one of my favorite Miyazaki films. So before we start, I’m actually gonna beg you all to get involved. It is really a great anime film. 2.
