Roxanne Marie B. Palma April 10, 2019 Greatworks A51 Mr. Carandang Individual Paper: Nicollo Machiavelli Quotes “It is far safer to be feared than loved.” Based on the quote, what Machiavelli is saying is that it is better safe than sorry; better to be feared than to be loved. My understanding on how Machiavelli’s advice to leaders is that love is internally based. It's a feeling you largely choose to feel, that you can turn on and off easily. Love is fickle. It comes, it goes. A leader that is well-loved is not always well-respected and is at risk of losing control, especially because of the devices of others. But, fear on the other hand is much more predictable and largely externally based. Lovers can fall out easily; fear does not wear off if your base character stays the same. By instilling fear while at the same time avoiding unnecessary cruelty, the ruler is able to maintain power and perhaps at the same time still have the respect of his constituents. The feared leader is less subjected to arbitrary chance therefore, fear generates a predictable outcome. It is better for a leader to be feared than loved, because love is fickle, while fear is constant. Based on his quote I think that leaders shouldn’t strive for either love nor fear. Love is a dangerous thing, for a leader. It's fickle. Terribly unreliable. It's a weak adhesive that hold things together. Fear, however, is worse. On the surface, it looks like the stronger adhesive. The thing about fear is, there will be actions done to generate that fear and those things you do, often create resentment to a person. One day, hurting something that someone loves, more than they fear and will make you pay for it. In some religions, this can be called karma. Leadership by fear means keeping one eye open while you’re sleeping and knowing that no one will mourn when you pass.

Based on my understanding and how I observed the consequences of each path, a leader should seek neither fear or love. A leader should strive for respect because it’s their choice that led the leader to lead them. Depending on the situation I may use the concept of Machiavelli’s words “better to be feared than to be loved”, but on a holistic point of view, I would rather garner respect rather than to receive love or fear. To earn the real “Respect” from others, there must be qualities to able to confirm and recognize the “achievements”. Then is it undeniable that you are the best person to be if the leader once garnered their respect.
