1 Thermochemistry Review Practice Problems These problems cover relevant topics in Chapter 9 of the textbook. This material was covered briefly in Lecture 17 of CHEM 122 and in detail in CHEM 121. The general concepts below are useful to know since similar ideas are used in the calculations of entropy changes and free energy changes in CHEM 122. Problem 1: Heat transfer and heat capacities How much heat is released to the surroundings when 2 moles of water cools from 180 °C to 20 °C at 1 atm? Note that the constant pressure heat capacities, C p , for water in vapor and liquid form are 36.4 J.K −1 .mol −1 and 75.3 J.K −1 .mol −1 respectively. H vap (H 2 O) = 40.7 kJ.mol −1 . Problem 2: Heat, work, and internal energy of a gas An ideal gas inside a piston is cooled so that the volume decreases from 50 L to 30 L, against an external pressure of 1 atm. During this process 2.5 kJ of energy is transferred from the system to the surroundings. Calculate the change in internal energy ( E ) during this process.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
