1 Ruoyi Wu Unit 3 Draft one Research Question: the “truth” of Chang’e’s story In my research regarding the story of Chang’e, there are many different versions. But I conclude them as two most popular versions: Chang’e stealing the elixir and Chang’e eating the drug because of external forces. The first popular version mainly states that Chang’e stole the elixir of immortality from her husband Hou Yi and then flew to the moon. And the second version is either that when preventing the elixir to be robbed by another man, Chang’e ate the drug out of panic; or that because Hou Yi was a brutal king, to prevent his people from suffering from him forever, Chang’e ate the drug of immortality. The differences of all the sources I found occur in primarily four aspects. First, the identity of Chang’e is mysterious. In the earliest source of this story, Shan Hai Jing , Chang’e was the “ wife of King Jun who gave birth to twelve moons (Zhao, Wang, & Chen 295)”. Also, in this book, the actual name of the mother of twelve moons was “Changxi”, but the pronunciation of “Changxi” and “Chang’e” is the same in ancient Chinese. If “Chang’e” and “Changxi” are the same person, all the other stories could be only misinformation. In another book, “
